Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the NES Title Screen

If you got a knack for the darker side of gaming, you’ll be hard-pressed to find something more rare or butt-crazy than Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the NES. This game is based on a hacked ROM created by Hosekn of USA Co, Ltd that looks and plays like you expect a game of this nature to play: like shit. You are limited enough as is, playing with the NES controller’s two buttons and digital pad, so add on top of that terrible animation and jerky gameplay controls and you are in for a treat.

A Nostalgic Feeling

Nostalgic Game Feeling: F-Zero

Today was a gorgeous cool day in Miami. There was nay a cloud in the sky and the day had a nectarous smell to it. Interestingly, almost instantly as I got in my car on the drive to my office, the aroma triggered a response from the depth of my assiduous brain where my child hood memories of playing F-Zero rested. I didn’t just remember being a kid, driving my tomato-green car I felt I was there: the scent, the freedom, the joy I felt being a young kid having the time of my life. It was inspiring.

This got me thinking: Have you had one of these experiences? What triggered it?

NES Style Left 4 Dead

How you would like blasting 8-bit zombies in the face? You’d like that very much wouldn’t you Mr. Crazed Lunatic. And thanks to Eric Ruth Games you can. Pixel Force: Left 4 Dead is a retro-fied version of Left 4 Dead made to play like a good-ol NES game. From the glitchy NES graphics to the terrific 4 channels of sound music tracks, the game oozes 8-bit charm. It is a bit difficult to play with your keyboard, but if you have a XBOX 360 controller, connect it and have fun.

Halo 2600

Atari Halo 2600

When playing Halo on an Xbox 360 just isn’t enough, you can now turn to the 2600. The company Code Mystics has created a fun little distraction called Halo 2600 that mimics the look and feel of an Atari 2600 game based in the Halo universe. You control Master Chief as he makes his way through a level filled with the Covenant.

Play the game here.

Consollection - History of Video Game Consoles

Patrick, Phil and Stacey has painstakingly put together a visual encyclopedia of all the video game consoles ever released. We were in awe to find out that there has been nearly 150 video game consoles released over the course of the industry’s infant life. The end result is this almost surreal.

NES Disney Game: Adventures in the Magic Kingdom Title Screenshot

In Adventures in the Magic Kingdom for the NES you control a very anonymous kid who helps Mickey Mouse find the Golden Key lost by the clumsy Goofy inside the Magic Kingdom. To get to the Golden Key, you must first acquire six silver keys to unlock Cinderella’s Castle. To obtain the keys you complete stages modeled after classic rides in the Disney Theme Park.

I love this current trend of taking really iconic songs like Metallica’s Master of Puppets and giving it an 8bit remix.

SUPERBROTHERS Dot Matrix Revolution

The SUPERBROTHERS have created a series of music videos with animations similar to what you’d find on a Commodore 64. In an interview with 8bit today Craig D. Adam, the founder of SUPERBROTHERS, mentioned that originally his intent was not design in pixel art, but when he “began exploring several methods of image-making … it had occurred to me that ‘audiovisually sophisticated’ did not necessarily require ‘technologically more complex’, and I could envision a style of retro pixel art that could be both startlingly fresh AND be relatively economical to deploy.”

8bit and 16bit Bitmap Fonts

Ste Pickford made hand drawn video game fonts for a living during the 8bit and 16 bit era. And to give back to the community, he has made his collection of bitmap fonts available on his web site for any use you like. If you are an independent video game developer you’ll appreciate it. If you are a regular Joe like me, you’ll appreciate some of these amazing unique fonts you won’t find in any modern first person shooter. It’s amazing to see how much individual detail developers pushed into their 8bit and 16bit games.
